Cougars to compete in Spokane at Whitworth Peace Meet

PULLMAN, Wash. — Washington State men's and women's track and field teams stay in-state this week as the teams prepare to travel to the one-day  Whitworth Peace Meet this Friday at Boppell Track at Whitworth Pine Bowl. The Cougars are coming off of a strong showing at the Stanford Invitational last week that saw Maribel Caicedo clock a school record 12.93 to win the women's 100m hurdles, as well as a program-record 15:52.35 from Zenah Cheptoo in the women's 5,000m run on night one.  This week's Whitworth Peace Meet will include Division I, Division II, and NAIA competition from around the Pacific Northwest as the Cougars prep for another trip to California next weekend for the Bryan Clay Invitational (April 11-13), UCLA Invitational (April 13), and LBSU Beach Invite (April 12-13).

Last Time at the Whitworth Pine Bowl - Buc Scoring Invite (Mar. 21-22)
Neema Kimtai set a Boppell Track facility record to win the women's 800m on day one, and the Cougars combined for an additional six event wins between the field and combined events.

Ben Chappell won Thursday's hammer throw with a season-best 62.17m mark, while teammate Caden Hottman placed second with a final mark of 59.76m.  Blake Sturgis (58.64m), Mark Schlichting (53.83m), and Cody White (53.78m), swept the podium in the men's javelin throw as Sturgis captured his first win as a Cougar to finish off day one.

Gilana Wollman reached a mark of 5.56m (18' 3.0") to tally her first-career outdoor win in the women's long jump, and Sarah Kovich followed up PR's in the 100m hurdles (15.24), high jump (1.70m), and shot put (10.15m) on day one, with another two lifetime-bests on Friday.  Kovich earned her first-career heptathlon win after placing first in the in the long jump with a personal-best 5.56m jump, finishing second in the javelin with a PR of over five meters at 35.27m, and a 2:49.06 in the 800m to finish atop the final heptathlon standings with a personal-best 4,634 points.

Brayden Freitag's first-place finish in the men's pole vault at 4.90m and Nana Gyedu's season-best 15.55m mark to win the women's shot put rounded out the two-day meet to bring the Cougars win total on the week to seven.

Up Next:
Washington State will splits its track teams between four separate meets next week on a busy weekend of track and field action around the nation.  A select group of Cougs will compete in next Thursday's Whitworth Twilight, while the rest of the squads head to California for the Bryan Clay Invitational (April 11-13), LBSU Beach Invite (April 12-13), and UCLA Invitational (April 13).
