PULLMAN, Wash. (May 6, 2023) – Washington State dropped a 6-2 decision to Washington in The Boeing Apple Cup Series at Bailey-Brayton Field Saturday evening. The series rubber game is set for 2:05 p.m. Sunday on the Pac-12 Networks.

WSU (27-18, 8-14 Pac-12 Conference) saw
Jacob McKeon double and homer while
Sam Brown went 3-for-3 with a walk. UW (27-14, 12-10 Pac-12) evened the series with a five-run fourth inning an a strong outing from starter Kiefer Lord who worked into the eighth inning and allowed two earned runs on seven hits.

Connor Wilford struck out four in 3.2 innings while
Elias Farland struck out three in two scoreless innings of work.

KEY MOMENTS OF THE GAME
UW loaded the bases in the first inning but starter
Grant Taylor ended the threat with a strikeout and a ground ball to second baseman
Elijah Hainline who stepped on second for third out. The Cougars jumped out to an early lead after McKeon double to left-centerfield,
Sam Brown singled to left and
Kyle Russell drove in McKeon with a sacrifice fly to right field.

Washington evened things up with a solo homer to left-centerfield to lead off the third inning and loaded the bases again in the fourth inning before four hits and a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch plated five runs for a 6-1 lead. The Cougars loaded the bases in the fifth but UW ended threat with a fielder's choice groundout to third base.

In the eighth, McKeon led off the inning with a towing home run to left-centerfield and Brown followed with an opposite-field line-drive down the left field line. UW went to the bullpen who ended the rally with a strikeout and pair of groundouts to preserve the 6-2 advantage.
