Cougs’ record-setting Saturday closes out NCAA West Preliminary

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Another fast day on the track at Hornet Stadium saw a pair of Washington State women's track and field all-time records fall as the 4X100m relay team (44.38) and Caroline Jerotich in the 3,000m steeplechase (10:07.70) moved to the top of the record book. Mackenzie Fletcher also etched her name into WSU history as she climbed into the WSU top-10 all-time list in the 400m hurdles (58.82) as the Cougars closed out the 2023 NCAA West Preliminary Round Saturday.

The 4X100-meter relay team of Elise Unruh-Thomas, Jada Van Staden, Jasneet Nijjar, and Skyler Walton brought out the fireworks to begin the day, breaking a WSU record that had stood since 1999.

Running in her second-career NCAA West Preliminary round,
Jerotich ran the eight-lap steeplechase quarterfinal from the front half of the field and closed her race with a 1:20.87 final lap to break the WSU program record previously held by Caroline Austin (2013, 10:08.49).

Elena Willems (800m, 2:08.13) and Alaina Stone Boggs (5,000m, 16:16.11) each closed out their respective seasons as they each made NCAA West Preliminary debuts to finish the outdoor campaign.

Up Next:
Louie Hinchliffe will continue the season in less than two weeks as he represents Washington State at the 2023 NCAA Championships (June 7-10) at Mike A Meyers Stadium in Austin, Texas. The true freshman from Sheffield, England will compete in the men's 100-meter dash national semifinal on Wednesday, June 7, beginning at 9:46 p.m. (PST).
