PULLMAN, Wash, (May 2, 2023) – Washington State scored five runs in the seventh and four in the eighth to clinch the season series with a 9-6 win over Gonzaga at Bailey-Brayton Field Tuesday evening.

WSU improved to 26-17 overall with its sixth straight midweek win for its best record through 43 games since the 2010 team also went 26-17. Five Cougars collected two games as leadoff hitter
Jonah Advincula singled twice, scored twice, drove in a run and stole two bases to push his season total to 20, the most by a Cougar since Mike Wetmore stole 32 in 1996.

Jacob McKeon added two hits and two RBI,
Sam Brown extended his hitting streak to 11 games,
Cam Magee collected two hits and scored twice,
Elijah Hainline had a pair of hits, drove in two and scored twice and
Jake Harvey also recorded two hits including the go-ahead bunt single that saw Hainline come around to score in the eighth inning.

Gonzaga dropped to 17-25 overall despite taking a 3-0 lead into the seventh inning.

Seven Cougars pitchers worked as reliever
Caden Kaelber picked up the win after recording the final out in the eighth and worked a scoreless ninth.

In the second, Gonzaga loaded the bases and took a 2-0 lead with a two-run single into right-centerfield. Cougar starter
Spencer Jones bounced back with a scoreless third before reliever
Connor Wilford entered and retired the first five hitters he faced before lefthander
McKabe Cottrell ended the fifth with a strikeout on three pitchers.

Gonzaga made it 3-0 with a two-out solo home run to left field in the sixth inning before WSU threatened in their half of the inning. The Cougars put two runners on but the Gonzaga bullpen ended the rally with three straight strikeouts.

In the seventh, Magee doubled to centerfield and scored on an
Elijah Hainline single to left field.
Jake Harvey blooped a single into centerfield, Hainline scored on a bunt from
Jacob Morrow who reached after a high throw to first base. One batter later, Advincula chopped an infield single to shortstop and beat the throw to first base and the throw went wide to allow two runs to score for a 4-3 lead. McKeon pushed the lead to 5-3 with an RBI-single back up the middle.

Gonzaga answered with three runs on a walk and three hits in the eighth inning to retake the lead, 6-5.

WSU retook the lead with four runs in the eighth after Magee started the inning with an opposite-field single through the left side and then came around to score from first on Hainline's RBI-double into the right field corner that saw Magee slide in just ahead of the tag. Harvey then beat out a bunt single that the pitcher threw down the line to allow Hainline to score for the lead. Two batters later, Harvey scored from second on another Gonzaga error and McKeon capped the day with an RBI-double to left-centerfield to score Advincula from second for the 9-6 lead.
