SALT LAKE CITY (April 29, 2023) – Washington State dropped a 12-10 slugfest to Utah at Smith's Ballpark Saturday afternoon.
WSU (25-16, 7-12 Pac-12) scored six runs in the sixth inning to build a 10-5 lead but Utah (17-24-1, 6-16-1 Pac-12) rallied with two runs in the sixth, two in the seventh and three in the eighth for the win. The Cougars brought the tying run to the plate twice in the ninth but the Ute bullpen held off the rally with a pair of strikeouts
Washington State received three hits from
Jake Harvey who hit a grand slam in the six-run sixth inning and
Sam Brown finished with two hits and three RBI. Utah collected 19 hits while rallying for the comeback win.
KEY MOMENTS OF THE GAME
Utah took an early lead with a two-run single in the second inning but the Cougars answered with back-to-back two-out RBI-singles from
Sam Brown and
Kyle Russell in the third inning. In the fourth, WSU took a lead as
Jacob Morrow put down a squeeze bunt to score
Elijah Hainline and Brown later brought in a run after getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded for a 4-2 lead.
The Utes answered an inning later with a pair of two-out hits that plated three runs in the inning for a 5-4 Utah lead.
In the sixth, Brown tied things up with another RBI-single in the sixth and
Cam Magee pushed WSU back in front 6-5 with a two-out RBI-single back up the middle. A walk to
Elijah Hainline loaded the bases and Harvey launched an 0-1 pitch to left for a grand slam and a 10-5 lead.
Utah chipped away with a pair of runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh and threatened for more but catcher
Jacob Morrow back-picked to first to pick off a runner for the second out and
Chase Grillo struck out the hitter on the next pitch to end the inning.
The Utes rallied in the eighth with three runs to take a 12-10 lead.
