SALT LAKE CITY (April 28, 2023) – Washington State dropped the series-opener 6-3 at Utah Friday afternoon.
WSU (25-15, 7-11 Pac-12) received two-hit games from
Kyle Russell and
Cam Magee while
Nate Swarts homered for the second straight game. Starting pitcher
Dakota Hawkins allowed just one earned run while working into the sixth inning but Utah (16-24-1, 5-16-1 Pac-12) took advantage of three Cougar errors to take the opener. Ut
The Utes broke a 3-3 tie with back-to-back home runs in the seventh inning.
KEY MOMENTS OF THE GAME
In the second inning,
Jake Harvey worked a walk and moved to second on a Came Magee single, moved to third base on a fielder's choice before coming home on a wild pitch for a 1-0 WSU lead.
Utah evened things up with a run in their half of the second and took a 3-1 lead with two runs in the fourth before WSU started to chip away. Swarts launched a long two-out solo home run 462-feet to left-centerfield and Russell evened things up with a two-out RBI-double down the left field line in the sixth inning.
Utah took the lead with back-to-back solo home runs off the Cougar bullpen in the seventh.
