Cougar Bats Erupt for 16-5 Win at Utah Valley

OREM, Utah (April 26, 2023) – Washington State collected 16 hits in a 16-5 win at Utah Valley Wednesday evening.
 
WSU improved to 25-14 overall for its best start since 1994 after Jacob McKeon, Nate Swarts and Elijah Hainline each homered while McKeon, Kyle Russell and Cam Magee each collected three hits. Leadoff hitter Jonah Advincula and McKeon scored four runs apiece, Brown and Magee each doubled twice and drove in three runs.
 
McKeon hit a two-run home run in the first inning and the Cougars pulled away with three in the third, three more in the fourth and five run the fifth inning. WSU starter Duke Brotherton picked up the win after striking out a career-high four in three innings.
 
The game was called after the seventh inning due to a ten-run rule, agreed upon by both teams prior to the game.
 
KEY MOMENTS OF THE GAME
In the first, Advincula worked a walk to lead off the game before McKeon hammered an 0-1 pitch the other way for a two-run home run to right field.
 
In the third, the Cougars pushed the lead to 5-1 with three runs in the inning on a Kyle Russell RBI-infield single and Magee's two-run single to right field. Brotherton settled in and retired eight straight hitters at one point including striking out the side in the second inning.
 
WSU added three more runs in the fourth on a McKeon RBI-single to left, a Sam Brown RBI-double to right-centerfield and a Russell RBI-single for an 8-1 lead. The Cougars pulled away with five runs in the fifth highlighted by a two-run home run from Swarts off the lights in left-centerfield and a two-run double from Brown.
 
Hainline added his own opposite-field home run to right field in the sixth for a 14-1 Cougar lead. Magee and Hainline recorded back-to-back RBI-doubles in the seventh for a 16-4 lead.
