Rowing completes day one at the Lake Wheeler Invitational

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Washington State women's rowing team picked up a pair of second-place finishes on the first day of the 2023 Lake Wheeler Invitational to highlight the first day of races for the Cougars in the Tar Heel State.

WSU's 2nd varsity eight boat collected both second-place finishes on the first day of the regatta. The Cougars' 2V8+ crew clocked in at 6:32.858 in the morning to finish second to Duke (7:17.157), while defeating Alabama (6:35.612), Clemson (6:41.30), Boston College (6:48.664) and North Carolina (6:50.010). The 2V8+ crew came back out on Lake Wheeler in the afternoon and again took second, this time posting a time of 7:03.219. The Cougars took second to No. 9 Syracuse (6:59.561), while Washington State finished ahead of Boston U. (7:08.079), No. 19 Iowa (7:08.445), Kansas (7:22.535), and North Carolina (7:26.691) in the afternoon.

Washington State's 1st varsity eight crew collected a pair of third-place finishes during the opening day of the Lake Wheeler Invitational. The Cougs' 1V8+ crew posted a time of 6:39.304 in the morning heat to finish behind Duke (6:25.624) and Clemson (2:29.718) and knock off Alabama (6:31.144), Boston College (6:43.688), and North Carolina (6:49.792) in Friday's first 1V8+ race. WSU's 1V8+ crew came back out for the afternoon heat and posted a time of 6:56.659 to once again place third. No. 9-ranked Syracuse won the heat in 6:42.789, while No. 19 Iowa placed second with a time of 6:52.603. The Cougs finished ahead of Boston U. (6:57.633), Kansas (7:11.635), and North Carolina (7:15.233) in the afternoon's 1V8+ race.

WSU's 1st varsity four and 2nd varsity four boats each picked up a third-place finish in the regatta's morning heat, with each defeating Boston College, North Carolina, and Clemson. The 1V4+ crew posted a time of 7:33.057 in its race, while the 2V4+ boat clocked in at 7:32.891. Washington State's 2V4+ boat also finished third in the afternoon, collecting a time of 8:01.064 to defeat Penn (3V4+), Kansas, and North Carolina. Washington State's 1V4+ posted a fifth-place finish in its afternoon heat at the Lake Wheeler Invitational with a time of 8:02.691.

The race schedule for the second day of the 2023 Lake Wheeler Invitational has been moved up due to the threat of inclement weather later Saturday afternoon. Races will now begin at 4 a.m. PT this Saturday, April 22. WSU will get underway at 4:38 a.m. PT with the 1V8+ race. WSU's full Saturday race schedule is listed below.
