Elijah Hainline hit the first he saw for a walk-off solo home run in the ninth inning for a 5-4 win over Santa Clara in the series-opener at Bailey-Brayton Field Friday afternoon.

WSU improved to 23-13 overall for its best start since 2006 after Hainline led off the bottom of the ninth with a 435-foot blast for his team-leading nine home run of the season and the Cougars first walk-off win of 2023. Santa Clara spoiled
Dakota Hawkins impressive start after he struck out seven and worked into the seventh inning before the Broncos scored twice in the seventh and tied the game with two in the ninth inning.

Jonah Advincula doubled and drove in two runs while
Cam Magee singled twice and scored, and Hainline doubled, homered and scored three times.

In the third, Santa Clara put two runners on by Hawkins ended the threat with a groundout to second and his fifth strikeout of the day. In the bottom of the frame, Cresswell doubled to right-centerfield and was bunted to third by
Bryce Matthews before
Jonah Advincula scored Cresswell with an RBI-groundout to second.

WSU picked up another run in the fifth as Magee lined an opposite-field single through the left side and
Elijah Hainline worked a walk. Cresswell bunted both runners up a base before Matthews made it 2-0 Cougars with a sacrifice fly to centerfield. Advincula followed with a long double to right-centerfield to score Hainline for a 3-0 advantage.

Hawkins retired eight straight at point in the middle innings before Santa Clara recorded back-to-back singles with one out in the seventh. WSU went to bullpen and the Broncos pushed two runs across on a passed ball and sacrifice fly to centerfield to make it a one-run game.

WSU added a run in their half of the seventh after Hainline doubled and later scored on a SCU wild pitch.

Santa Clara tied things up with one out in the ninth on a double down the left field line, a triple to right field and a single up the middle. Hainline drove the first pitch he saw over the centerfield wall for the win.
