Cougars Close Out 4-2 Road Win over Gonzaga

SPOKANE, Wash. (April 18, 2023) – Washington State received three-hit efforts from Elijah Hainline and Sam Brown while McKabe Cottrell earned his first career save in the 4-2 win at Gonzaga Tuesday afternoon.

The Cougars improved to 22-13 overall after taking the lead with a two-run fourth and a run in the fifth before the Spokane native Cottrell escaped bases-loaded-nobody out jam with allowing just one run before firing a perfect ninth for the win. Fellow Spokane native Elijah Hainline doubled twice, tripled, drove in a run and scored a run while Brown added three singles along with an RBI and run scored.

Six Cougar pitchers worked as Duke Brotherton earned the win after recording scoreless fourth and fifth innings.

Gonzaga dropped to 13-20 overall.

KEY MOMENTS OF THE GAME
In the second, Gonzaga used a pair of leadoff singles to put runners on the first and third but starter Spencer Jones induced a 4-6-3 ground ball double play that a run came across on the play and followed with a strikeout to end the frame.

In the third, Hainline doubled just inside the third base line and later scored on Bryce Matthews RBI-groundout. WSU added a pair of runs in the fourth after leadoff singles from Brown and Kyle Russell as Cam Magee scored Brown with a sacrifice fly to centerfield and Hainline made it 3-1 with a two-out RBI-double down the left field line to score Russell.

WSU made it 4-1 in the fifth after Jonah Advincula walked to start the inning, stole second and moved to third after the throw sailed into centerfield, and Brown scored him with a sacrifice fly to centerfield.

WSU received good efforts from the pitching staff throughout the evening as starter Spencer Jones worked three innings, Duke Brotherton worked scoreless fourth and fifth innings, Elias Farland fired a scoreless sixth and Connor Wilford worked a scoreless seventh.

In the eighth, Gonzaga loaded the bases with nobody out and cut the lead to 4-2 with a single but reliever McKabe Cottrell ended the threat with a fielder's choice groundout as Cottrell grabbed a comebacker and to the lead runner at home for the first out. Cottrell then induced a flyout to right and ended the threat with a strikeout.

Cottrell worked a perfect ninth for his first career save.
