Bullpen Paces Cougars in Series-Opening Win over Arizona

PULLMAN, Wash. (April 14, 2023) – Washington State posted a 6-3 series-opening win over Arizona at Bailey-Brayton Field Friday evening.
 
Washington State improved to 20-12 overall and 6-9 in Pac-12 Conference play after relievers Cam Liss and Connor Wilford combined to hold Arizona to just two hits over the final five scoreless innings. Liss picked up the win with 1.1 innings while Wilford earned the save with 3.2 scoreless frames.
 
Jonah Advincula and Cam Magee each collected two hits while Magee delivered a two-run double in the seventh. WSU scored twice in the fifth to take a 4-3 lead before Magee added on in the seventh.
 
Arizona held a 3-2 lead in the fifth before allowing two in the fifth and two more in the seventh to drop to 17-14 overall and 5-11 in conference play.
 
KEY MOMENTS OF THE GAME
In the first, Arizona took a 1-0 lead after a leadoff single, stolen base and RBI-single. The Cougars answered with two runs in the second as Jake Harvey punched a single the other way through the right side and Cam Magee followed with a single to put runners on the corners with one out. Will Cresswell lined an RBI-single into centerfield to tie the game and Elijah Hainline followed with a run-scoring sacrifice fly to centerfield for a 2-1 lead.
 
In the fourth, Arizona used four hits to push two runs across and take a 3-2 lead. WSU retook the lead with two runs of their own in the fifth after loading the bases as Sam Brown worked a bases-loaded walk and Kyle Russell followed with an RBI-fielder's choice groundout for a 4-3 WSU advantage.
 
Cam Liss worked a scoreless fifth, Liss and Connor Wilford worked the sixth before Wilford fired a scoreless seventh.
 
WSU picked up two big insurance runs in the seventh as Sam Brown and Kyle Russell both walked before Harvey was hit by a pitch to load the bases. With two outs, Magee pulled a 3-1 pitch down the right field line for a two-run double to push the lead to 6-3.
