PULLMAN, Wash. (March 31, 2023) – Washington State used six extra-base-hits to post a 9-5 series-opening win over No. 12 UCLA at Bailey-Brayton Field Friday evening.

The Cougars improved to 16-9 overall and 4-6 in Pac-12 Conference play after collecting 11 hits and posting four-run second and fourth innings to back starter
Dakota Hawkins who struck out eight and allowed three earned runs on five hits in six innings to earn the win.
Jacob McKeon homered and scored twice,
Jonah Advincula recorded two hits, stole a base and scored a run,
Elijah Hainline added two hits and
Jake Harvey had the go-ahead two-run single and scored twice.

UCLA dropped to 16-7 overall and 6-4 in conference play.

KEY MOMENTS OF THE GAME
In the second, UCLA used a pair of hits, a sacrifice fly and a throwing error to plate two runs but WSU answered four in their half of the inning.
Will Cresswell pulled a two-out RBI-double to left field, Harvey followed with a two-run single into left field and
Cam Magee capped the inning with an RBI-single down the left field line for a 4-2 lead.

McKeon led off the fourth with a towering 400-foot solo home run to left field and the Cougars added four more runs an inning later, all with two outs.
Kyle Russell started the scoring with an RBI-double the other way just inside the first base bag and down the line, McKeon added an RBI-single up the middle, Brown doubled the other way off the left field wall and Advincula capped the scoring with a line-drive single back up the middle to score Brown for a 9-3 lead.

UCLA used an opposite-field two-run home run to right field to cut the WSU lead to 9-5 in the fifth.

In the seventh, UCLA loaded the bases with two outs but lefthander
Cam Liss entered from the bullpen and ended the threat with a strikeout.
Andrew Baughn worked a scoreless eighth and recorded the first out in the ninth before
Chase Grillo recorded the final two outs.
