Cougars Fall to No. 29 Arizona State

PULLMAN, Wash.  – The Washington State Tennis team ran into a tough foe Sunday morning as No. 29 Arizona State posted a 7-0 victory over the Cougars at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at Hollingbery Fieldhouse.

Doubles action opened the day and the Sun Devils (12-3, 2-1 Pac-12) captured the early advantage as Marianna Argyrokastriti and Chelsea Fontenel posted a 6-2 win over Fifa Kumhom and Hania Abouelsaad at No. 3. WSU (7-8, 0-4) evened it up at No. 1 where Eva Alvarez Sande and Elyse Tse completed a 6-3 win over Patricija Spaka and Domenika Turkovic, the nation's 11th-ranked team. That left the deciding doubles point to Court 2. In a back-and-forth match, ASU's Sedona Gallagher and Rachel Hanford escaped with a 7-5 win over Yang Lee and Yura Nakagawa, giving the Sun Devils the opening point.

In singles play, the Sun Devils increased the lead to 2-0 as Fontenel, ranked No. 113 nationally, defeated Alvarez Sande, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1. ASU pushed it to 3-0 as Gallagher completed a 6-3, 6-4 win over Kumhom at No. 4 followed by Argyrokastriti's 6-3, 7-5 win over Tse at No. 3, clinching the team victory.

In a marathon match on Court 2, Turkovic fought off a strong comeback from Nakagawa en route to a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 win over the Cougar freshman. At No. 6, Hanford cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win over WSU's Tiffany Phout while Court 5 needed a third-set tiebreaker as Spaka came away with a 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (12-10) win over Abouelsaad.

The Cougars are next in action March 31 when they host Oregon in a noon match at the WSU Outdoor Tennis Courts.
