Cougs resume Pac-12 season, fall to Arizona, 5-2

PULLMAN, Wash. -- Eva Alvarez Sande picked up her second win of her freshman campaign playing No. 1 singles, but Washington State women's tennis (7-7, 0-3 Pac-12) fell, 5-2, to No. 57 Arizona (14-6, 2-1 Pac-12) Friday at the WSU Outdoor Tennis Courts.
Alvarez Sande and doubles partner, Elyse Tse, remained perfect in doubles play, winning 6-3 in their first match of the season at the No. 1 spot in the Cougars' dubs lineup. The freshman from Spain then followed up with a dominant, 6-2, 6-0, win at the top of the WSU singles lineup. Alvarez Sande was 7-4 overall playing No. 2 singles and has now won two of her first three matches replacing Maxine Murphy atop the Cougars' lineup.
Fifa Kumhom also improved her singles record on the day, moving to 14-10 on the season after winning a long third-set breaker, 12-10.
Alvarez Sande and Tse had Washington State ahead in the doubles point before the Wildcats stole the point with 6-4 wins at both Nos. 2 and 3. Alvarez Sande and Tse had gone 5-0 at No. 2 prior to making their debut at No. 1 doubles in Friday's dual.
Arizona later went ahead,4-1, in the match after a 6-3, 6-2, Arizona win at No. 3 singles clinched the team win for the Wildcats.
Washington State will play host to 29th-ranked Arizona State on Sunday beginning at 11 a.m. back at the WSU Outdoor Tennis Courts.
