Cougars set to open outdoor season in Grand Canyon State and Spokane

PULLMAN, Wash. -- Washington State men's and women's track and field team kicks off the outdoor season in Arizona at the GCU Invitational this Friday and Saturday. The Cougars will also send a smaller contingent of athletes to Spokane to compete in the Sam Adams Classic at Boppell Track in the Whitworth Pine Bowl on Saturday.
The GCU Invitational commences with the women's hammer throw as the only event on Friday which begins at 2 p.m. Saturday's field events start at 1 p.m. with the javelin, and the running events start at 5 p.m. with the women's 4x100 relay. Saturday's Sam Adams Classic is set to begin on Saturday with the women's discus at noon while the men's 100m starts at 3:50 p.m.

2022-23 INDOOR RECAP
Maribel Caicedo lowered the women's 60m hurdles record three times during the season, qualifying for the NCAA Indoor Championships with a season-best 7.99 to win the Don Kirby Elite. She won the 60m hurdles five times on the season as the Cougars tallied 63 total podium finishes between the men's and women's teams this winter.
Washington State finished the indoor circuit having set six freshman records and five program records across its 13-meet schedule in 2022-23.
The men's high jump finished the season tied for 18th in the country, the highest ranking high jump team in the Pac-12. On the women's side, the best final event group ranking last year was the hammer throw at 14th in the country which was also good for the second-highest final ranking in the Pac-12. Last year's Washington State's jumps squad also saw its first conference champion the pole vault (Jacob Englar) since Sander Moldau in 2018.

2022 SEASON RECAP
The 2022 cougars rewrote the outdoor history book as the team posted five freshman records, six All-American finishes, and a multitude of program top-10 marks. In the rankings, the Cougars improved throughout the entire season, moving up the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association outdoor rankings, finishing tied 54th, an improvement of 39 spots from week one.
