Final Results
SPOKANE, Wash. — Washington State men's and women's track and field teams combined for four wins on the track and a pair of wins in the field in Saturday's Spokane Invitational.
Micaela De Mello (women's 60m hurdles, 8.40),
Mason Lawyer (men's 60m, 6.70),
Jasneet Nijjar (women's 300m, 37.67), and
Jared McAlvey (men's 300m, 33.71) captured their first wins on the track this winter and
Caden Hottman (men's weight throw, 16.76m) and
Eli Lawrence (men's triple jump, 14.71m) also came away with first-place finishes as the Cougars opened the 2023-24 indoor season from The Podium.
The Cougars saw a number of transfers and first-year student-athletes make their debut in the lone December meet on the WSU schedule, but it was the veterans that stole the headlines in the opening meet of the season. De Mello's 8.40 in the women's 60m hurdles final sparked a series of wins for the Cougs, with
Mason Lawyer following up quickly after with a lifetime-best 6.70 to win the men's 60m dash.
Caden Hottman (16.76m) was the lone thrower to surpass 16 meters in the men's weight throw, capturing first before Nijjar (37.67) and McAlvey (33.71) each took the top spot in the women's and men's 300m runs, respectively.
Eli Lawrence reached 14.71m in his first-career collegiate triple jump, finishing first in a small field of 13 competitors.
Up Next:
Washington State student-athletes will continue training through a one-month break in competition as it looks ahead to a split weekend between The Podium in Spokane and the Dempsey Indoor facility in Seattle. The Spokane Sports Showcase is the Cougs' next meet on Friday, Jan. 12, followed by the UW Preview on Sat., Jan. 13.
