Margie Detrizio dirbbles against San Diego State

Detrizio Nets Opener, Cougs Fall at Arizona State

Box Score TEMPE, Ariz. – The Washington State women's soccer team (8-5, 1-4) lost to the Arizona State Sun Devils (8-2-4, 3-1-1), 5-1, Sunday afternoon in Tempe, Arizona. WSU senior Margie Detrizio scored the opening goal in the first half, but the Sun Devils evened the game before halftime and used a second-half flurry to secure the win.

Midway through the first half, Detrizio received a throw-in from junior Reese Tappan, using her footwork to split a pair of defenders on the right flank. Detrizio cut into the area, dribbling at the ASU keeper, and finishing under the crossbar and into the upper netting in the 22nd minute.

The Cougars' lead was short-lived, as the Sun Devils returned from a stoppage for hydration break and found the equalizer in the 28th minute. ASU's Suzuka Yosue delivered a low, driven cross into the six-yard box, where a Cougar defender tried to clear the ball, but ultimately deflected the pass into the WSU goal.

Returning from the locker room, the Cougars looked in control from the whistle. Margie Detrizio had another good opportunity blocked near the penalty spot. Arizona State closed down passing lanes and prevented the Cougars from making the final pass in the attacking third for a quality look.

Arizona State scored the game-winning goal from the penalty spot in the 54th minute. Yosue finished to her left post after a Sun Devil attacker was fouled in the area. With the Cougars hunting the equalizer, ASU capitalized on open space in the counter. Defender Emilie Simpson carried the ball all the way through the midfield, playing give-and-go with Yosue, before firing a rocket from 23 yards out past a diving Nadia Cooper.

Shortly after the third ASU goal, Keeley Copper picked up a pair of yellow cards five minutes apart, sending her to the locker room and leaving WSU down a player. The Sun Devils added two additional goals in the 78th and 79th minutes to put the game away.

The loss is WSU's first on the road this season, and only the second time under Coach Shulenberger conceding as many goals. The Cougars continue their Conference road trip, visiting California next Friday, Oct. 13 to face the Golden Bears at 3 p.m. PT.
