Cougars in Top 10 After First Day at Leadership and Golf Invitational

UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. – Junior Madelyn Gamble fired a second-round two-under-par, 70, to lead Washington State during the first day of play at the 2023 Leadership and Golf Invitational Monday, hosted by Seattle U and played at the par-72, 6,093-yard Chambers Bay Golf Course.
 
As a team, the Cougars shot 294-301 in the first two rounds to finish Monday in ninth place at 595 (+19). Southern California leads the event at -15, 561, seven strokes ahead of Minnesota.
 
Gamble followed up her first round of 1-over, 73, with a second-round 70 that included four birdies. Her two-round score of 1-under, 143, has her tied for 11th overall. Graduate student Danielle Suh began her Cougar career with an opening-round of 1-over, 73, including two birdies, followed by a 77 for a two-round score of +6 150, tied for 41st overall.
 
Sophomore Hannah Harrison and freshman Alice Johansson both finished Monday's two rounds at 7-over, 151, tied for 53rd. Harrison began her day with a 1-over, 73, which included three birdies, followed by a 6-over, 78. Johansson went 75-76 in her debut as a Cougar. Her opening round was highlighted by an eagle on the par 4, 12th, the only eagle of the day for WSU.
 
Junior Sarah Skovgaard-Bils shot rounds of 75-81 and ended her first two rounds at +12, 156, tied for 79th.
 
WSU has two student-athletes competing as individuals. Freshman Sara Pineros played her first round as a Cougar in 4-over, 76, then improved by two strokes with a 2-over, 74, including four birdies, in the second round. Pineros' two-round score of 150 has her tied for 41st overall. Junior Emily Cadwell shot rounds of 74-83 to finish her day at 13-over, 157, tied for 85th overall.
 
The final round at the Leadership and Golf Invitational is set for Tuesday morning. WSU is scheduled to tee off at 8 a.m.
