PULLMAN, Wash. (May 7, 2023) – Washington State dropped the series finale to Washington 8-2 at Bailey-Brayton Field Sunday afternoon.
WSU (27-19, 8-15 Pac-12) received three hits from Bryce Matthews while Jacob McKeon and Sam Brown each recorded RBI-singles, and Jonah Advincula walked twice and stole his 23rd base of the season. UW improved to 28-14 overall and 13-10 in conference play after scoring twice in each of the first three innings to clinch the series.
KEY MOMENTS OF THE GAME
UW used a one-out two-run bloop single over the leaping shortstop to plate two runs in the first inning. The Cougars answered with an opposite-field RBI-single from Brown through the left side made it a 2-1 game.
UW added two runs in the second and two more in the third for a 6-1 advantage. McKeon singled through the right side to make it a 6-2 game in the fifth but the Husky bullpen ended the rally with a strikeout.
The Washington State bullpen settled things down as McKabe Cottrell worked scoreless fourth and fifth innings, Grillo finished off a scoreless sixth and Shane Spencer fired a scoreless seventh. UW pushed the lead to 8-2 with a two-run home run to centerfield in the eighth inning.
