PULLMAN, Wash. (March 3, 2023) – Washington State collected 16 hits and Cam Magee delivered the go-ahead RBI-single in the seventh inning of a 7-5 victory over Southern Indiana in front of 1,126 fans at Bailey-Brayton Field Friday afternoon. Friday's series opener was also the Cougars' home-opener.

Six Cougars recorded multiple-hit games led by three-hit performances from Sam Brown who homered, Elijah Hainline and Jake Harvey as WSU improved to 8-1 for the second time in the last three seasons. Brown hit a two-run home run in the first inning and Magee broke a 5-5 tie with the go-ahead two-out RBI-single in the seventh inning.

Four Cougar pitchers combined to strike out 13 Southern Indiana (5-4) hitters as reliever Andrew Baughn picked up the win with 2.1 innings and Chase Grillo tallied his third save of the year with a scoreless ninth. Dakota Hawkins started and struck out five in four innings of work.

KEY MOMENTS OF THE GAME
In the first, Brown hammered the first pitch he saw over the right-centerfield fence for a two-run shot, his first home run as a Cougar after transferring from Portland. Jacob Morrow followed with a double off the left field wall and Hainline brought him around with a groundball single back up the middle for a 3-0 lead.

Southern Indiana made it a one-run game with a three-run third inning after four hits and a walk  in the frame, highlighted by a two-run triple.

Hawkins struck out five through four innings but gave way to the bullpen after surrendering a leadoff walk in the fifth inning. Lefthander Spencer Jones entered the game, retired the first batter he faced on a sacrifice bunt and ended the threat with a pair of strikeouts to preserve the 4-3 lead.

USI evened things up with a run in the sixth inning after a one-out single, a pair of walks and a sacrifice fly to the warning track.

In the seventh, Brown pulled a single into right field to leadoff the inning, Hainline followed with a one-out rocket off the third baseman and Magee delivered a two-out RBI-single back up the middle.

WSU added two runs in the eighth on two-out RBI-singles from Brown and Morrow.

In the ninth, USI loaded the bases with nobody out in the ninth after a pair of walks and a single but Grillo struck out the side despite allowing an RBI-single to seal up the win.
