PULLMAN, Wash. (May 3, 2022) -- The Cougar Pursuit Leadership Academy wrapped up its inaugural semester with the Tier 1: Rising Leaders cohort. Rising Leaders participants attended three one-hour educational workshops throughout the semester focused on self-awareness, the DiSC assessment, and vulnerability.

The Cougar Pursuit Leadership Academy is designed to increase student-athletes' awareness, confidence, and ability to positively lead a team to achieve results through practical experience and theory-based approaches. The three-tiered program consists of Rising Leaders, Advancing Leaders, and Leaders of Change tiers as well as Leadership Coaching sessions that will last throughout the student-athletes' WSU experience.

"Our Cougar Pursuit Leadership Academy participants were able to increase their self-awareness during the three workshops, which will help them grow and assume leadership roles in and out of their sports. Our student-athletes will be able to apply the skills and techniques learned in these workshops during their fall and winter seasons, and we look forward to helping them succeed in their roles," Dr. Shelby McKay, Associate Director of Athletics, Staff & Student-Athlete Development, stated.

As the program continues into the fall semester, participants will have 1:1 Leadership Coaching sessions that will help student-athletes reflect on their leadership during practice, competition, and in other team settings. Football student-athlete Cameron Ward stated that "I am excited about learning different ways to lead others."

Participants were selected by their coaching staff based on their pre-existing leadership qualities, opportunity for growth, and impact on their teams. The Spring 2022- Rising Leaders Cohort included the following student-athletes from fall and winter sports:
