INDIANAPOLIS - Washington State men's and women's outdoor track and field teams had a combined 20 individuals and one relay team qualify for the 2022 NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships preliminary rounds as announced Thursday by the NCAA. The Cougars will compete in the NCAA West Preliminary hosted by the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Ark., on May 25-28.
Washington State's track and field teams are coming off of a strong showing at the 2022 Pac-12 Championships in which they tallied a total of 25 individual top-10 performances and five podiums at the three-day conference meet.
Caroline Jerotich (5,000m),
Ben Chappell (Hammer Throw),
Renee Yang (400m hurdles), and
Mevin Jelagat (10,000m), and
Micaela De Mello (100m hurdles) each set PR's at last week's Pac-12 Championships. Jelagat's 33:56.49 set a new freshman outdoor record while De Mello lowered her own program record in the 100m hurdles twice, placing second overall after improving her time to 13.03 in Sunday's final.
De Mello was later
named Pac-12 Freshman of the Year, becoming the first woman in WSU track and field history to earn the award. The men's team also brings its share of history heading into NCAA preliminaries as
Jacob Englar's Pac-12 title made him the fifth pole vault conference champion in WSU track & field history and the first since 2018.
Qualifiers from the West Region wil advance to compete at the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships held June 8-11 in Eugene, Oregon. A complete list of qualifiers can be found
