TUCSON, Ariz. (April 10, 2022) – Washington State dropped the series-finale 5-2 but earned a series win over No. 9 Arizona at Hi Corbett Field.

The Cougars (12-19, 4-11 Pac-12) received two hits from
Kyler Stancato and a pinch-hit two-run single from
Bryce Matthews while
Cam Liss worked three scoreless innings of relief and tallied six strikeouts.

WSU clinched their first series in Tucson since 2014, their first road series win over a nationally-ranked team since taking two of three at No. 14 Washington in 2016 and posted their first road series win over a Top-10 team since taking two of three at No. 6/8 Oregon in 2012.

Arizona (22-10, 10-5 Pac-12) avoided the sweep by collecting nine hits, used a three-run fourth inning and saw their pitching staff leave eight Cougar baserunners on base.

In the second, Arizona used a bloop double to left field, a wild pitch and an RBI-groundout to shortstop to take a 1-0 lead.

The Cougars put two runners on in the first and second innings but a pair of flyouts ended the threats.

In the fourth, Arizona took advantage with a pair of walks and used a pair of RBI-singles to plate three runs in the fourth inning for a 4-0 lead. The Wildcats added a solo homer in the fifth inning.

In the eighth, the Cougars put a pair of runners on with two outs in the eighth inning and both moved up a base on a wild pitch before pinch-hitter
Bryce Matthews delivered a two-out two-run single back up the middle to make it a 5-2 Arizona lead. The Wildcat bullpen ended the threat with a fly out to centerfield.

Keith Jones II singled to left with one out and moved to second on a wild pitch but was stranded to end the game.
