SEATTLE (March 19, 2022) – Washington State dropped an 8-2 contest to Washington in the second game of The Boeing Apple Cup Series Saturday evening. The start of the game was delayed 30 minutes due to rain.
WSU (9-9, 1-4 Pac-12) received a two-run homer from Nate Swarts who recorded his third home run in the last three games.
Washington starter Calvin Kirchoff worked 6.2 innings and lost a no-hitter in the seventh on a Swarts home run. UW scored at least one run in the first six innings highlighted by a three-run third to clinch the series.
KEY MOMENTS OF THE GAME
In the first, Kyle Russell worked a one-out walk but was left stranded. In the bottom of the frame,
UW took advantage of a WSU miscue as the leadoff hitter reached on a throwing error and two batters later scored on a single through the left side. UW added a run with a two-out single in the second inning for a 2-0 lead. The Huskies pushed lead to 5-0 with a two-run single and two-out RBI-single in the third.
UW added a solo homer to centerfield in the fourth and a bases-loaded walk in the fifth to make it a 7-0 advantage.
In the seventh, Swarts hammered one the other way for a two-run shot, breaking up the UW no-hit bid. WSU put two runners on with one out in the eight inning but the Husky bullpen ended the threat with a pair of strikeouts.
