Melisa Ates posted a straight-set win in singles to lead Washington State to a 4-0 victory over Gonzaga Tuesday afternoon at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at Hollingbery Fieldhouse.

With the win, the Cougars improve to 13-11 while Gonzaga falls to 11-5.

Ates, who prior to the match was recognized as part of Senior Day recognition in advance of her final home match, had little trouble in defeating Jenna Sloan, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6 singles. The win was Ates' 194th as a Cougar, combining singles and doubles, tying the all-time mark also held by former Coug Elizaveta Luzina.

The Cougars also received singles victories from
Michaela Bayerlova and
Hikaru Sato. Bayerlova, ranked No. 86 nationally, defeated Kate Ketels 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1 while Sato posted a 6-3, 6-2 win over Adrianna Sosnowska at No. 2.

At No. 3, WSU's
Fifa Kumhom was trailing Cate Broerman 6-3, 3-1 when play was stopped with the team match decided. The remaining two matches had not started.

The day began with doubles with the Cougars winning at No.2 and 3 to clinch the opening point.

The Cougars are next in action Friday when they face Washington in Seattle. Match time is set for 1:30 p.m.
