LIHUE, Hawaii – Christian Yanagi ended his first day at the 44th John Burns Intercollegiate just outside the top-50 on the player leaderboard, as the freshman finished in a tie for 58th to lead the Washington State men's golf team after 18 holes of play at the Wailua Golf Course. The Cougars will open the second-round tomorrow, Feb. 21, at 10 a.m. PT.
Yanagi ended the first round at three-over-par, 75, to place 58th in the 124-player field after the first round. Yanagi caught fire in his front nine, as he made two birdies to get within striking distance of par with 36 holes left to play. One stroke behind Yanagi is senior
Daniel Kolar, who is sitting in a tie for 75th. Kolar's managed to make four birdies through first 18 holes of play in Hawai'i to finish his round at four-over-par, 76.
Freshman
Tianyu Wu finds himself only one stroke behind Kolar heading into Friday's second round. Wu made his only birdie of the day in his front nine, which helped him finish in a tie for 89th with a round score of five-over-par, 77. Opening up his spring 2020 campaign, freshman
Clayton Thatcher made a six-over-par 78, and will open the second round in 108th with 36 holes to play in the tournament. Freshman
Yuya Eguchi made a seven-over-par, 79 and is tied for 113th place to round out the scoring for the Cougars.
"Today was probably the most difficult conditions we've seen on this course" said Coach
Dustin White. "That being said, we need to do a better job of staying in the present to make good decisions a put together a score. The effort is there, we just need to execute a little better and settle into the round. We still have 36 holes in front of us, and that's all we are focused on."
As a team, Washington State shot 306 (+18) in the opening round of the John Burns Intercollegiate. The Cougs will begin the second round in 21st on the team leaderboard.
BYU and UNC Wilmington are tied for first after 18 holes of play, as each team posted a 287 (-1). Texas A&M is just one-stroke off the lead at 288. Individually, six players sit in tie for first place at 69 (-3), while 16 other players are within two strokes of the leaders.
