HONOLULU – The Washington State Women's Tennis team opened its 2020 spring season in fine fashion, capturing seven of a possible nine matches before darkness halted the first day of play at the 2020 Weinman Foundation Hawaii Invitational Thursday at the UH Tennis Courts.
 
After a six-hour delay due to heavy rains and wind, the Cougars opened with two doubles matches against Hawaii and two against Northern Arizona, sweeping the Lumberjacks and splitting the two against Hawaii.
 
In singles play, the Cougars played five matches against Northern Arizona, two against Hawaii and one each against Louisville and BYU. Junior Michaela Bayerlova began her spring season in convincing fashion, defeating Hawaii's Bojana Markova, ranked No. 91, 6-2, 6-2. WSU's Savanna Ly-Nguyen, Pang Jittakoat and Melisa Ates all posted straight set wins. Ates defeated NAU's Ellie Millard, 7-5, 6-1, Ly-Nguyen defeated Millard's teammate, Adrianna Sosnowska, 7-6, 6-3, and Jittakoat had little trouble with Louisville's Jelena Vujanic, 6-2, 6-1.
 
The remaining matches had started but were not finished due to darkness. They will be continued Friday morning after doubles play. Matches are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. PT.
