Cougars Top Stony Brook in JMU Invitational Finale

Volleyball splits tournament day to start the season 2-1 overall.

HARRISONBURG, Virginia – The No. 22 ranked Washington State Cougars came out on top against Stony Brook in the final match of the JMU Invitational.

Set scores from the match were: 25-12, 25-15, and 25-21 in favor of the Cougars (2-1).

Washington State bounced back in a big way in match number two of the day against the Seawolves of Stony Brook (0-3). The Cougars shot out of the gate in the opening set, as a 10-4 run fueled by multiple Pia Timmer kills, and a flurry of Stony Brook errors. WSU only continued to keep their foot on the gas pedal as a pair of kills from Reagan Cooper surged the lead out t 15-8 midway through the set. Madga Jehlarova, and Ashley Brown added kills to their stat sheet as a 12-1 Cougar run gave WSU a commanding 24-9 advantage. Timmer capped off the dominate set with a kill for the 25-12 victory.

The second set in this nonconference bout was all Washington State as the Cougars picked up from the opening set with a 7-0 run. Jehlarova tallied back-to-back kills, and Penny Tusa contributed an ace to see WSU up big early in this match. Cooper and Magda continued to rack up the kills into this set to see Washington State out to an 18-9 lead. Mykayla Myers recorded her first collegiate kill and Aria McComber posted a service ace to extend the WSU lead out to 21-11. Each squad committed multiple errors down the stretch of this set, but it was Cooper who tallied a kill to see Washington State win it 25-15.

The Cougars saw an increase of pressure from the Seawolves in set three, but never lost overall control. Stony Brook tied up the set at 12-12 after chipping away at the WSU, however the Cougars regained control incredibly quick with a Timmer kill, and a block from Cooper and Jehlarova. Washington State remained dominate throughout with a 5-1 run to push the lead out to 23-19 after the Penny Tusa ace. Pia continued to fuel the offensive attack with the final kill of the match for the 25-21 victory.

STAT OF THE MATCH
Pia Timmer recorded a Washington State season-high 16 kills on 39 total attacks, with a hitting percentage of .308 to lead the Cougars.
