Cougars Ninth-Inning Rally Held off by No. 1 UCLA

PULLMAN, Wash.  – Washington State took a two-run lead into the seventh inning before UCLA rallied for a 13-10 victory in the series-finale at Bailey-Brayton Field Sunday afternoon. The Cougars scored two runs in the ninth and brought the potential tying run and game-winning runs to the plate with one out but the UCLA bullpen ended the threat with a pair of strikeouts and a fly out.

WSU received three hits from Kyle Manzardo for the second straight day along with two hits and two RBI from Garrett Gouldsmith as four Cougars recorded multiple-hits. UCLA rallied for the comeback win with a five-run seventh inning and finished the game with 17 hits.

In the second, UCLA used a solo homer to left-centerfield to take a 1-0 lead but the Cougars came right back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. Manzardo and Collin Montez each singled to right field to start the second and both were bunted up a piece by Tyson Guerrero. Rob Teel brought Manzardo home with a ground ball to shortstop and Montez later scored on a Garrett Gouldsmith squeeze bunt for a 2-1 Cougar lead.

In the fourth, the Bruins used five hits to score five runs for a 6-2 advantage but WSU answered again. Gouldsmith doubled to right field to score a run and Barnum came off the bench and delivered a two-run double to right-centerfield to cut the UCLA lead to 6-5. Following a hit-by-pitch and an Andres Alvarez single, Dillon Plew drew a bases loaded walk to bring home the tying run. Manzardo dug in a blooped a single into left-centerfield that the UCLA shortstop corralled and threw wildly to third base, allowing a second run to score on a play for an 8-6 Cougar lead.

In the seventh, UCLA retook the lead with a three runs after a walk, a pair of hits, a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly for a 9-8 advantage. One batter later a two-run single to right pushed the lead to 11-8. In the eighth, the Bruins used a double and infield single to score a run and added a solo homer in the ninth for a 13-8 lead.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Cougars made things interesting, loading the bases with nobody out before Bradley Polinsky pulled a double down the right field line to score two runs and put runners on second and third. The next two batters struck out before Sinatro walked to load the bases but the UCLA closer got Alvarez to fly out to foul territory down the left field line to end the game.
