PULLMAN, Wash. – With a victory in the varsity eight race, Washington State rowing held on to the Fawley Cup for the third-straight year and 25th time all-time as the Cougars defeated Gonzaga in all five races in dual action Sunday at Wawawai Landing on the Snake River.
"For us to sweep Gonzaga, it's not something that happens every time we race, and it was nice that every single senior was successful in their last race on the Snake River. It was really stiff competition. I think both Gonzaga and our squad have gotten better over the last month. I was thankful to get the races done in great conditions and it just gives us something to build off of moving forward."Â
Each spring the Cougars and Bulldogs meet to compete for the Fawley Cup. The Fawley Cup has been awarded to the varsity eight winner each year since 1991, with the exception of a canceled regatta in 2008. The Cougars have now won 25 of the 28 Fawley Cups and the last three.Â
