PULLMAN, Wash. – With a victory in the varsity eight race, Washington State rowing held on to the Fawley Cup for the third-straight year and 25th time all-time as the Cougars defeated Gonzaga in all five races in dual action Sunday at Wawawai Landing on the Snake River.

"For us to sweep Gonzaga, it's not something that happens every time we race, and it was nice that every single senior was successful in their last race on the Snake River. It was really stiff competition. I think both Gonzaga and our squad have gotten better over the last month. I was thankful to get the races done in great conditions and it just gives us something to build off of moving forward." 

Each spring the Cougars and Bulldogs meet to compete for the Fawley Cup. The Fawley Cup has been awarded to the varsity eight winner each year since 1991, with the exception of a canceled regatta in 2008. The Cougars have now won 25 of the 28 Fawley Cups and the last three. 

Wind causing choppy water led to a five minute delay in the second race of the day, the varsity eight race. The Cougars (coxswain- Hannah Welzbacker, stroke- Megan Duthart, Ivy Elling Quaintance, Kamila Ondrackova, Jessica Norris, Rosalina Torcivia, Emma Conaty, Emma Gribbon, bow- Paige Danielson)
overcame the slight waves to defeat Gonzaga with a time of 6:35.82, nearly three seconds ahead of the Bulldogs at 6:38.26.

The varsity eight crews took to the water in the third race of the day. The Cougars (coxswain- Juliet Perry, stroke- Kateryna Maistrenko, Taija Thompson, Sara Brevick, Sue Yu, Leena Kattel, Renee Kemp, Emma Barrett, bow- Sophia Rogers) jumped out to an early lead and maintained it to take victory with a time of 6:49.24. Gonzaga followed five seconds behind, finishing in 6:54.19.

In the varsity four race, WSU (coxswain- Chloe White, Samantha Schmidt, Isabella Cristelli, Grace Arnis, bow- Linnea Davison) took an early lead and held an open water lead by the 1,500-meter mark. WSU won the race with a time of 7:31.44, nearly 30 seconds ahead of Gonzaga in at 8:01.05.

With high winds coming in, WSU raced two second varsity four boats against Gonzaga's one in the final race of the day. WSU A (coxswain- Rachel Gartner, stroke- Emily Austin, Cassidy Thompson, Emily Carlson, bow- Rachel Christman) took the lead and held on to win with a time of 8:02.56. The Cougars' B boat (coxswain- Aneesa Turner-Rahmen, stroke- Dakota Pint, Susanna Kielley, Zoey Roberts, bow- Tori Kison) took second with a time of 8:16.20, followed by Gonzaga in third at 8:25.10. 
 
In the opening race of the day, WSU's third varsity eight and novice eight crews raced Gonzaga's third varsity eight. The Cougars' third varsity eight (coxswain- Jenny O'Dell, stroke- Ella Cowan de Wolf, Emily Weible, Nora Hefte, Madeleine Bingham, Ony Chigozie, Abigail Linnenkohl, Katelyn Ware, Meg Montgomery) came away with the decisive victory with a time of 6:55.88. WSU's novice eight  (coxswain- Rachel Gartner, stroke- Olivia Olmstead, Allison Nelson, Natalie Williams, Kailey Kassuba, Kendra Mutch, Caroline Kowalchuk, Kyra Parker, bow- Kaylee Logan) was second at 7:10.92. Gonzaga's third varsity eight finished with a time of 7:41.70 for third. 

Washington State has three weeks to prepare for the Pac-12 Championships, which will take place Sunday, May 19 at 9 a.m. at Lake Natoma at Gold River, Calif.
