PULLMAN, Wash. – The 13th-ranked Washington Huskies captured four singles matches en route to a 4-1 victory over No. 35 Washington State Saturday afternoon at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at Hollingbery Fieldhouse.
Â
With the loss the Cougars end the regular season with an 18-9 record, 3-7 in Pac-12 play. Washington improves to 18-4, 8-2.
Â
The match started more than 90 minutes late as rain storms from the morning left the courts unplayable for a time. After finally starting outside with doubles, rain again made an appearance, pushing the match inside.
Â
The change of venue did not both the Cougars as they captured two of three matches to take the doubles point. At No. 1,
Tiffany Mylonas and
Hikaru Sato, ranked 47 nationally, upset No. 30 Stacey Fung and Nika Zupancic, 6-2. That even the match at a win apiece as at No. 2, Washington's Vanessa Wong and Zoey Weil had no trouble with
Yang Lee and
Melisa Ates, winning 6-0. That left the double point to be decided at No. 3, where WSU's
Michaela Bayerlova and
Aneta Miksovska rode a break of serve to defeated Kenadi Hance and Natsuho Arakawa, 6-3.
Â
IN singles play the Cougars captured the first set in three matches but could not hold the momentum. At No. 5, Washington's Sedona Gallagher won a close first set before defeating Ates, 7-5, 6-2, evening the team match at 1-1. Washington gained the lead at No. 1 when Fung, ranked No. 95, rallied from a set down to upset No. 32 Bayerlova, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Â
At No. 2, Sato fought off a match point after being down a set and 5-1, evening the second set at 5-5. After two close games, the Cougar freshman drew new closer as Wong won 6-1, 2-6, 7-5. Washington closed out the match at No. 6 when Zupancic saved a match point late in the third to win, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.
Â
The two remaining matches were stopped once the team outcome had been decided. Mylonas was leading Katarina Kopcalic, 6-3, 2-1 at No. 3 and Lee and Arakawa were 2-2 early in the first set.
Â
The Cougars head to the Pac-12 Championship in Ojai, Calif. this week where they are expected to be the No. 8 seed. The tournament bracket will be announced Monday.
