LIHUE, Hawai'i - The Washington State men's golf team held 17th at the conclusion of the second round of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate Friday, hosted by Hawai'i at Lihue, Hawai'i.
"We're one round closer to putting it all together," head coach Dustin White said. "There have been a lot of encouraging things so far this week. It's just a matter of having everyone come together during the same round."
WSU junior Daniel Kolar (-4, 140) maintains the Cougar lead as he's in a tie for 13th. No. 73 Rhett Rasmussen of BYU leads the pack with a two-round score off 136 (-8). Zach Smith of UC Santa Barbara and Aaron Terrazas of UTEP are tied for second, both scoring 137 (-7). There is a six-way tie for fourth between No. 5 Alex Smalley of Duke, No. 8 Chun An Yu of Arizona State, No. 15 Peter Kuest of BYU, No. 7 Chandler Eaton of Duke, Joe Fryer of Long Beach State and Blake Wagoner of Arizona State with a score of 138 (-6) to round-off the top-5.
The Cougars shot 292 (+4) in the second round to bring their score to 587 (+11). No. 11 Arizona State leads the tournament with a two-round score of 558 (-18). No. 2 Duke is in second with a score of 560 (-16), and No. 20 Texas A&M (-12, 564) is in third.
Nine other teams managed to bring their scores under par with the addition of Friday's round. No. 33 UNLV and No. 24 BYU are tied for fourth, both with scores of 567 (-9). The seven remaining teams are; No. 32 North Carolina (-7, 569), No. 48 Saint Mary's (-5, 571), Northern Colorado and UC Santa Barbara both with scores of 573 (-3), Grand Canyon (-2, 574), and No. 49 Arizona and New Mexico tied with 575 (-1). Long Beach State is the only team at even with a two-round score of 576.
"We've got guys playing solid, but haven't done it at the same time," White said. "Tomorrow gives us the chance to go out and make that happen."
Junior Nicklaus Chiam jumped up with a second-round score of 70 (-2) giving him a two-round score of 148 (+4). He is followed closely by seniors AJ Armstrong (+5, 149) and Grant Cole (+6, 150) in ties for 74th and 82nd respectively. Junior Scott Redelsperger is tied for 99th with a score of 155 (+11).
