No. 25 UCLA Tops No. 22 Cougars Inside Bohler

The Bruins down WSU in three sets Friday evening in Pac-12 action.

PULLMAN, Wash. – No. 22 Washington State volleyball fell to the No. 25 ranked Bruins of UCLA Friday evening in three sets inside Bohler Gym.

Set scores from the match were: 25-27, 17-25, and 22-25 in favor of UCLA (13-7, 8-3 Pac-12).

The Cougars (18-5, 7-4 Pac-12) were even with the Bruins of UCLA throughout the majority of this opening set of play, as 13 overall ties would occur during. A 3-0 scoring run gave the Crimson and Gray the 21-19 late advantage after back-to-back blocks featuring Alexcis Lusby and Jocelyn Urias. An additional block from Hannah Pukis and Urias gave the Cougars set point at 24-22, however the Bruins would generate a 5-1 overall run to take set one from WSU at 27-25. Jocelyn was a force for WSU in this first period, totaling three kills and four block assists as well.
 
UCLA jumped out to an early 5-1 lead over Washington State to begin set number two, but the Cougars chipped away at the visitor lead with help from kills by Pia Timmer and Pukis. The Bruins would then create scoring runs of both 5-0 and 4-0 in this contest to hold a sizable lead over WSU at 21-13 late in the set. UCLA capped off set two with a kill and the 25-17 win gave the visitors the 2-0 overall match lead.

The Bruins once again took the early set lead over the Cougars as a 9-2 run put the visiting lead at 11-6. Washington State, down 18-11 in this third set, was not going away quietly and with a 7-2 run of their own, trailed UCLA just 20-18. Kills from Charity Bradley and Pukis, along with an Urias and Timmer block, put the visitor lead within reach for the Cougars. Unfortunately Washington State went on to trade points with the Bruins down the stretch, and UCLA claimed set three at 25-22, and took the match as well.

STAT OF THE MATCH
Senior Jocelyn Urias continues to climb the Washington State all-time career block assist list, as she totaled six tonight against the Bruins. Urias has compiled 341 total in her WSU career, moving her up to eighth all-time, passing Jen Barcus (2002-05).

  • Magda JehláÅ™ová turned in a solid night overall as well with seven kills, a .385 hitting percentage, and four blocks also. 
  • Pia Timmer led WSU in total kills with 11 in the contest on 36 swings, and added one block to her stat sheet.
  • Hannah Pukis continued to guide the offensive attack with 29 assists overall, and added five kills, five digs, and two blocks.
  • Washington State will hit the court next, Sunday, Nov. 3 as the Cougars will host the Trojans of USC inside Bohler Gym with first serve scheduled for 12 p.m.
