PULLMAN, Wash. – Senior Melisa Ates and sophomore Hikaru Sato each claimed two titles to highlight the final day of play at the 2019 Cougar Classic Sunday at the WSU Outdoor Tennis Courts.
 
The two teamed to captured the Crimson Flight doubles title, cruising to a 6-0 victory over Lucy Octave and Annaliese County of Utah State for the title. In the Gray Flight doubles title match, Utah State's Carolina Millan and Renata Lombera captured the final three games to post a 7-5 win over WSU's Savanna Ly-Nguyen and Carla Quadflieg.
 
The Crimson Flight singles final proved to be a slugfest as Sato and Ly-Nguyen needed three tough sets to decide a victor. Ly-Nguyen rode a break a serve to a 7-5 first set, then held a match point in the second before Sato forced a tiebreaker that she eventually won 7-1. In the third set, the two went back and forth before Sato finally prevailed for the 5-7, 7-6 (1), 7-6 (5) victory. In the Gray Flight singles final, Ates captured a 6-4, 6-3 win over Utah State's Zara Ryan to cap her strong tournament.
 
In the Cougar Flight, Quadflieg saved a match point as she defeated Idaho's Nicole Horacek 7-5, 1-6, 12-10 in the consolation final. In the Palouse Flight championship match, Utah State's County got past WSU's Maddie Egan, 6-0, 6-2.
 
The Cougars are next in action Friday when they compete at the Long Beach Invitational in Long Beach, Calif.
