Melisa Ates 2019 Cougar Classic

Ates Captures Singles and Doubles Titles at Redbird Invite

| By:
NORMAL, Ill. – Senior Melisa Ates came away a double winner Sunday at the 2019 Redbird Invite at the Bloomington Tennis Center. Ates captured the Flight 1 Singles title and teamed with Carla Quadflieg to take the doubles title.

Ates and Quadflieg opened the day by rolling through Illinois State's Vujicic and Damnjanovic 6-0 in the doubles final. In other doubles action, WSU's Yang Lee and Maddie Egan won a pair of backdraw matches, defeated Northern Illinois' Potsi and Slisko 6-1 followed by a 6-2 win over NIU's Naves and Dmitrieva.

In singles action, Ates squared off against teammate Lee and the two went the distance. After dropping the first set 6-1, Ates rallied to capture the second 6-2, forcing a super tiebreaker for the championship. Ates jumped out early and held on as she won 10-5 for the tournament title. It marked Ates' second tournament victory of the fall, also winning at the Cougar Classic in September.

In Flight 2 singles, Quadflieg captured the third-place match with a 1-6, 6-2, 10-8 win over NIU's Christy Robinson. In Flight 3 action, Egan needed a second-set tiebreaker to defeat Dmitrieva, 6-2, 7-6 (7).

The Redbird Invite concludes WSU's fall schedule and the team will return to action in early January at the Hawaii Invitational.
