Cougars Beat Beavers in Four

WSU downs Oregon State 3-1 overall to remain undefeated at home.
PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State volleyball continued to protect their home court of Bohler Gym, defeating the Beavers of Oregon State 3-1 Sunday afternoon.
Set scores from the match were: 25-21, 25-21, 18-25, and 25-18 in favor of the Cougars (15-3, 4-2 Pac-12).
The WSU scoring exploded early on in this Pac-12 contest against Oregon State (8-9, 2-4 Pac-12), with eight straight points from the Cougars for the 12-6 lead. The Beavers committed five overall errors during this run, and the Cougars saw points scored from kills by both Jocelyn Urias, and Pia Timmer, along with a Penny Tusa ace. Washington State controlled the pace of the opening set the remainder of the match, as additional kills from Magda Jehlářová and Hannah Pukis helped seal off OSU at 25-21.
Set number two in this match featured the Cougars once again out to an early lead, with multiple 3-0 scoring runs to hold the 10-7 advantage. A 6-1 run created by WSU midway through the second period, anchored by a pair of kills from Alexcis Lusby, and multiple blocks from Magda, extended the home lead out to 16-9. The Beavers again started knocking at the door late in the set, trailing by only two points at 23-21, but a Tusa kill, and a costly OSU error saw Washington State claim the set at 25-21.
Oregon State stepped up in set three however, battling the Cougars much closer as nine total ties occurred leading up to an 11-11 score line. OSU found some rhythm and built a 9-2 run late into the set to hold a 19-13 lead over WSU. These two squads went on to trade points down the stretch but ultimately it was the Beavers who won set three at 25-18 overall.
Penny Tusa began set four on fire for the Cougars, recording three kills to see WSU up 10-4 and set the tone for the remainder of the period. Julia Norville provided a service ace during this opening run, along with Lusby contributing an additional kill. Washington State began taking complete control of this match with another scoring run at 4-0, as another Tusa kill and another Norville ace put the Cougars in front at 18-12. Timmer and Lusby were determined to finish off Oregon State for good in this match, as each posted kills to cap off the set victory and take the match at 3-1 overall.

- Pia Timmer led the Cougars in total kills this afternoon with 13, and posted a hitting percentage of .297 overall.
- Jocelyn Urias turned in a fantastic performance with 10 kills, a .529 hitting percentage, one ace, and three total blocks.
- Magda Jehlářová also contributed on both sides of the ball with 10 kills, hit .533 overall, and recorded a match-high seven total blocks.
- Washington State returns to action Friday, Oct. 18, as the Cougars will host Arizona in a Pac-12 match, slated for a 7 p.m. start inside Bohler Gym.
