Offense Powers Cougars Over NIU In WKU Tournament

WSU downs the Huskies to remain perfect on the year

WHO WHAT WHEN WHERE…
BOWLING GREEN, Ky.  --  Washington State Volleyball (8-0) continued its' perfect streak to open the 2018 season Friday morning, picking up a win over nonconference opponent Northern Illinois to start the WKU Tournament. 

The Cougars controlled each set throughout this contest, totaling 10.0 blocks as a team, compared to NIU's 1.0, along with WSU adding five aces during the match. 

Set scores for the match were: 25-14, 25-16, and 25-18.

The opening set of play featured a quick 5-1 advantage for the Cougs on four kills from Taylor Mims, Ella Lajos, and McKenna Woodford. WSU went on to hold multiple leads of eight points throughout the remainder of the set, along with seeing the largest lead at 23-13 over the Huskies. 

Set number two once again saw Washington State jump out to an early lead at 6-2 overall with some help from Claire Martin, Woodford, and Lajos kills. Northern Illinois began to slowly advance on that Cougar lead, however three straight kills from Woodford pushed the lead back out to 20-13. Washington State took a 2-0 match lead over the Huskies after back-to-back attack errors saw WSU win it, 25-16. 

WSU continued the trend of opening a set with a run, as the Cougars built an 11-3 lead off of a 7-1 overall run, with kills from Jocelyn Urias, Ashley Brown, and Woodford. Washington State and Northern Illinois traded points late in the set, until a big kill from Mims swung the momentum fully in WSU's favor, leading to a final attack error on the NIU side to see the Cougars take the set at 25-18, and the match at 3-0 overall. 


STAT OF THE MATCH
Washington State recorded an attack percentage of .459 in this match, the highest of the 2018 season through eight contests.

NOTES…
  • The No. 22 ranked Cougars improve to 8-0 overall this season, 2-0 at neutral sites.
  • Mims, and Woodford posted double-digit kills at 15 and 10 respectively. 
  • Setter Ashley Brown recorded a match-high 37 total assists, as she is averaging over 38 assists per match this season. 
  • The Cougars posted 10.0 total blocks compared to that of Northern Illinois 1.0 overall.
