Sander Moldau Soars in Pole Vault at Bryan Clay Invitational

| By:
AZUSA, Calif. -- Washington State's Sander Moldau won the men's pole vault with his second lifetime-best mark in two days at the Bryan Clay Invitational Friday at Azusa Pacific University's Cougar Stadium.

Just one day after clearing a lifetime-best pole vault height of 17-feet 1 inch (5.21m) at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate Meet at Long Beach, Moldau won the men's pole vault at the Bryan Clay Invitational with a PR of 17-8 1/4 (5.39m). That mark is the fourth-best in WSU all-time and the first time since 2005 that a Cougar vaulter has cleared a height that ranked in the top five in school records.

Moldau, a freshman from Rakvere, Estonia, just missed claiming the WSU freshman record set in 1988 by Patrik Johansson with a height of 17-8 1/2 (5.40m). Friday's vault series was brief for Sander Moldau: he cleared 16-8 1/4 (5.09m) on his second attempt but then cleared the next two bars of 17-2 1/4 (5.24m) and 17-8 1/4 (5.39m) on his first attempts.

Late Friday night, Kaili Keefe, a sophomore from Yakima, ran a PR time of 4 minutes 20.69 seconds in the women's 1500m, 18th overall and the sixth-best time in WSU's all-time records.

Greer Alsop and Oyinlola Akinlosotu finished one-two in the women's triple jump. Alsop, a redshirt senior from Invercargill, New Zealand, won with a season-best leap of 40-1/2 (12.51m) while Akinlosotu, a freshman from Federal Way, Wash., was the runner-up with a PR leap of 40-2 (12.24m).

Peyton Fredrickson soared over the high jump bar at 6-11 (2.11m), just 1/2 inch under his lifetime-best, for third place Friday.

Nick Johnson, a sophomore from Spokane, Wash., won the men's 110m hurdles in a time of 14.07 seconds after running a PR time of 13.98w Thursday at Long Beach.

THEY SAID:
Brad Walker, WSU assistant coach/vertical jumps said, "Sander looked great today. He's really confident in his vault at the moment. I wanted him to come in at 4.94m (16-2) and he said he wanted to open at 5.09m (16'7) which was only 11cm below his lifetime best. I told him if he made it, I'd trust his judgement moving forward but if not, he wouldn't be able to decide his heights moving forward. He smoked his opening height, looked great at his 3cm PR at 5.24m and then easily cleared 5.39m which gives him the Pac-12 lead. I think he is a couple meets away from jumping a 5.50m (18-feet) jump."

NOTEWORTHY:
  • Cougar alum CJ Allen, competing for the Palouse Track Club, won the men's 400m hurdles in a time of 50.42
  • Remaining competition for WSU Track & Field this week is the SCC Spokane Memorial #2 April 20-21, at Spokane Falls Community College
