WSU Rowing Opens Spring Season at San Diego Crew Classic

WSU women's rowing will race three crews.
COUGAR ROWING OPENS SEASON AT SAN DIEGO CREW CLASSIC: Washington State rowing hits the road for the first time this spring, traveling to Mission Bay at San Diego for the 2018 San Diego Crew Classic...racing is scheduled to begin at 7:20 a.m., both days, with the varsity eight leaving the starting line at 9:24 a.m., Saturday, followed by the second varsity eight at 10:40 a.m, and the varsity four scheduled at 11:04 a.m....Sunday race times will be determined by Saturday's preliminary results.
THE 2018 SAN DIEGO CREW CLASSIC: In its 45th year, the San Diego Crew Classic is one of the largest regattas in the world and is held for primarily eight-oared rowing shells...it takes place at Mission Bay on a 2,000-meter course...the course begins near the Sea World towers and finishes at Crown Point Shore...the regatta features high school junior programs, collegiate teams, master's clubs, and Olympic-level competition...there will be more than 4,000 athletes competing in over 100 races over the weekend...there are two or three opening heats for each event and the top three teams (for two-heat events) or two teams (for three-heat events) will advance to the Grand Final...for two heat events...the next three finishers advance to the Petite Final, if scheduled...for three heat events, the next two finishers advance to the Petite Final, if scheduled, and the following two finishers advance to the Third Final, if scheduled...WSU will compete in the Women's Collegiate Varsity Invitational - Jessop-Whittier Cup; the Women's Collegiate 2V - Jackie Ann Stitt Hungness Memorial Trophy; and the Women's Collegiate Varsity 4+ - Karen Plumleigh Cortney Cup.
ABOUT THE FIELD: The Cougars will compete against Pac-12 crews including USC, UCLA, and Cal, which finished second at the 2017 NCAA Championships...other competitors in the field include: Texas and Gonzaga, which placed fourth and 19th, respectively at the NCAA Championships, as well as Tennessee, Oklahoma, Loyola Marymount, Portland, Sacramento State, San Diego, San Diego State, Saint Mary's, SMU, UC Santa Barbara, Victoria.
LAST SEASON AT THE SAN DIEGO CREW CLASSIC: WSU raced four boats at the 2017 San Diego Crew Classic...in a battle for the Jackie Ann Stitt Hungness Memorial Trophy, the second varsity eight crossed at 6:43.49, placing third...in the open eight Grand Final, WSU's third varsity eight finished third behind Stanford and No. 13 USC...WSU's varsity eight placed fourth in its quest for Jessop-Whittier Cup finishing at 6:29.37...in a quest for the Karen Plumleigh Cortney Cup, the Cougar's varsity four was edged out by UCLA to place fifth at 7:36.71.
WSU HEAD COACH JANE LARIVIERE ON SAN DIEGO CREW CLASSIC: "Cal is coming back, so it will be great to see them early. USC, UCLA, Texas, and Oklahoma will be there, so it will be a good smattering to see what's out there and help us improve. It's a two-race weekend, we'll have heats and finals, so right within the regatta there's an opportunity to improve."
WSU HEAD COACH JANE LARIVIERE ON TEAM DYNAMIC: "We graduated a lot of experience, which has caused a lot of individual effort to work hard. When you have impactful athletes leave, people see opportunity. There's been quite a bit of parity on the team with the seat races being close, which have helped us discover speed in different areas."
COUGARS AT THE 2017 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS: WSU finished the 2017 NCAA Championships placing 14th as a team...the varsity eight finished 13th overall to have the best finish of the WSU crews...the second varsity eight placed 14th, while the varsity four took 15th...Washington took first as it swept all its races to become the first program to do that in NCAA Championship's 21 year history.
COACHING STAFF: Jane LaRiviere begins her 16th year as head coach of the WSU rowing program...as a team, the Cougars have raced in 11th NCAA Championships and five-straight under LaRiviere...she is joined by associate head coach Karl Huhta, assistant/novice coach Brandon Campbell, coordinator of operations Amy Van Buskirk, and graduate assistant Dave Kempsell...Huhta is in his fourth year with the Cougars, and first year as associate head coach… Campbell is entering his third year and first as novice coach…Van Buskirk and Kempsell are each in their first year with the Cougars.
