HILTON HEAD, S.C. -- Washington State tennis student-athlete Michaela Bayerlova played a tight first set but ran out of steam as she fell in the final Sunday at the ITA Hilton Head tournament at the Van Der Meet Shipyard Racquet Club.
Bayerlova, seeded No. 3 and ranked No. 601 in the world, was facing top-seed Bianca Turati, who is currently ranked No. 552. In a tight first set, the two players traded breaks of serve before reaching a tiebreaker at 6-6. In the tiebreaker it was all Turati as she won all seven points to take the first set, 7-6.
In the second set, the Cougar sophomore, who twice rallied from a set down earlier in the tournament, could not rally a third time. Turati was too strong as she broke Bayerlova two more times en route to the 7-6, 6-2 win.
Bayerlova will next play in the ITF $25,000 Charleston event, beginning Tuesday.
