HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Washington State's Michaela Bayerlova captured her opening singles match at the ITF Hilton Head tournament Tuesday at the Van Der Meet Shipyard Racquet Club.
Bayerlova, seeded No. 3 and ranked No. 601 in the world, needed three sets to defeat Argentina's Guillermina Naya, who is ranked No. 927. After dropping the first set 6-1, Bayerlova cruised in the second, winning 6-2. After trailing 5-2 in the decisive set, the Cougar sophomore ran off five straight games to close out the match, 1-6, 6-2, 7-5.
In doubles play, Bayerlova and Rasheeda McAdoo, seeded No. 2, posted a 6-3, 6-2 win over Jessia Aney and Alysa Tobita to advance to the second round.
Play continues Wednesday at the Van Der Meet Shipyard Racquet Club.
