LOWELL, Ore. – No. 15 Washington State rowing swept Oregon State in all races to win an eighth-straight Winchell Cup, and the varsity eight captured the Crawford Perpetual Plate for a third-consecutive year at the morning session of the Oregon State Classic, Saturday on Dexter Lake at Lowell, Ore.
Â
The Cougars also raced four wide with No. 1 Washington, UCLA, and OSU in the afternoon session, and the top-ranked Huskies won all races of the session, with WSU placing second in three of the four heats.
"The afternoon provided a timely opportunity to improve specific parts of the morning races and I think we were successful at that, across the board," said WSU head coach
Jane LaRiviere. "There's still tons of work for us to do, but we've been improving each time out."
Â
The varsity eight (coxswain-

In the race for the Crawford Perpetual Plate, the Cougars were able to win by nearly an eight-second margin, and crossed at 6:43.81. OSU followed at 6:51.57. It was WSU's third-consecutive outright win of the Crawford Plate, and eighth-straight year claiming at least a share of the Plate (OSU and WSU tied in 2014).
Â
In the second race of the Winchell Cup versus Oregon State, the battle between the Cougars and the Beavers tightened. WSU's second varsity eight (coxswain-

Â
After a break and a rain squall, the WSU crews returned to the water in the afternoon session to race four across with fellow Pac-12 competitors No. 1 UW, UCLA, and Oregon State. The final race of the afternoon session for WSU's third and fourth varsity eights was cancelled, due to wind.
Â
The afternoon racing started with the UW second varsity four running away from the field by 46 seconds. The No. 1 Huskies completed the race at 7:17.14 and the WSU second varsity four finished second at 8:03.42, beating Oregon's club team by a fraction of a second (8:03.92), and Oregon State by almost 27 seconds (8:30.35).
Â
In the battle of varsity fours, WSU fought stroke-for-stroke for second with UCLA, but the Bruins (7:34.34) completed the course two seconds faster than the Cougars at 7:36.94. WSU beat OSU in the race by nearly seven seconds, and No. 1 UW won at 7:17.80.
Â
Second varsity eight racing saw the top-ranked Huskies (6:29.44) out-pace the Cougars who crossed at 6:47.71. WSU was able to finish ahead of both UCLA and OSU.
Â
The varsity eight race also went to the No. 1 Huskies. WSU made it a race with UW, finishing just seven seconds behind the Huskies, at 6:45.35. UW's winning time was 6:38.06. WSU beat UCLA and OSU by five and 16 seconds, respectively.
Â
The scheduled race for WSU's third and fourth varsity eights was cancelled due to squally conditions.
Â
The Cougars will train at home next weekend, before embarking for the East Coast and the Clemson Invite on Lake Hartwell, at Clemson, S.C. The two-day event will be Saturday, April 22 and Sunday, April 23.
