Bortfeld Breaks School Indoor 5k Record in Seattle

SEATTLE -- Washington State junior distance standout, Devon Bortfeld, broke the school indoor record in the women's 5000m Friday night at the UW Invitational Indoor meet at the Dempsey Indoor Facility in Seattle.

Bortfeld, a junior from Sammamish, Wash., ran a time of 16 minutes, 30.30 seconds for ninth place in the elite field in Section 1 of the women's invitational 5000m. Bortfeld broke WSU's indoor record of 16:34.89, run by CharLee Linton in 2016 in Seattle. Bortfeld's time is also sixth-best in all-time records at WSU.

Morgan Willson ran a PR time of 17:15.90 for second place in the women's 5000m Section 2. Also racing in this section were Emily Dwyer who knocked 24 seconds of her PR a time of 17:24.17 for seventh, and Melissa Hruska with a time of 17:47.41 for 16th.

In the men's 5000m Section 1, Sam Levora ran a time of 14:48.24 for 15th while a pair of freshmen ran in Section 2: Andrew Cooper's time of 15:04.01 for 10th and Cameron Dean's time was 15:45.57 for 15th.

In Section 1 (heats 3 & 4) of the women's 3000m, Morgan Lash led the way for WSU with a time of 10:13.08 for seventh placed, with Josie Brown eighth in a time of 10:14.12 and Steffie Pavey's time of 10:27.15 was 15th.

Kyler Little ran a time of 8:31.40 for fifth place in the men's 3000m with Kennan Schrag sixth with a time of 8:33.50.

A limited number of Cougar distance runners will continue in the meet at the UW Invitational Saturday while the majority of the WSU men's and women's teams will be competing at the New Mexico Team Invitational in Albuquerque.
