CHARLESTON, S.C. – Washington State's Michaela Bayerlova overcame a slow start to post a straight-set win in her quarterfinal match at the ITF Charleston tournament Friday at the LPT Tennis Club.
The Cougar freshman, ranked No. 744 in the world, recorded a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Amanda Rodgers to advance to Saturday's semifinal. After a slow start in which she failed to capitalize on six break points in Rodgers' first two service games, Bayerlova found her grove. Trailing 0-4, she reeled off eight straight games to take the first set and control of the match.
With the early break in the second, Bayerlova cruised, not having to face a break point in the second set. Leading 5-3, she broke Rodgers serve for the second time in the set to clinch the victory.
Bayerlova will next face qualifier Anna Turati of Italy, who upset No. 2 seed Laura Pigossi in their quarterfinal matchup.
