AZUSA, Calif. -- Washington State's Alissa Brooks-Johnson finished fourth and Liz Harper took seventh at the Mt. SAC Relays/California Invitational heptathlon at Azusa Pacific University Thursday.
Competing in the elite Mt. San Antonio College (Mt. SAC) Relays Invitational heptathlon, Brooks-Johnson, a redshirt junior from Doty, Wash., finished in fourth place overall but was the second-best collegian with a total of 5,616 points. She long jumped a wind-aided 18-4 1/2w (5.60m) and threw the javelin a distance of 133-5 (40.68m). She finished with the event with an 800m time of 2:17.58.
Harper, a senior from Missoula, Mont., scored 5,420 points for seventh place. Thursday she long jumped a wind-aided distance of 18-5w (5.61m), then tossed the javelin a PR distance of 112-11 (34.42m), and ran the 800m in 2:17.53.
Canadian Nicole Oudenaarden won the 17-woman elite competition with a score of 5,927 points.
It was a disappointing day for Lindsey Schauble (sophomore, Kennewick, Wash.) in the California Invitational heptathlon. Schauble started day two with a long jump of 17-2 3/4 (5.25m) but fouled all three throws in the javelin so her competition ended.
TORRANCE, Calif. -- The competition at the 59th Annual Mt SAC Relays, held this year at El Camino College in Torrance, Calif., began Thursday with some distance races and the hammer throw.
In the women's 3k steeplechase, Devon Bortfeld (junior, Sammamish, Wash.) knocked 11 seconds off her lifetime-best with a third place time of 10:23.28 with Emily Dwyer (redshirt senior, Sammamish, Wash.) fourth in a PR time of 10:26.19. Thursday's time moved Bortfeld to third-best in WSU all-time records and Dwyer is now seventh-best in school rankings. Desi Stinger finished 43rd in a time of 11:21.99.
Morgan Willson ran a PR time of 35:54.16 in the Women's Open-A 10,000m race for 23rd and Melissa Hruska ran the 10k Open-B race in a time of 37:43.03 for 24th.
Kyler Little (sophomore, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho) ran the men's 3000m steeplechase in a PR time of 8:59.95 for 13th place. In the men's 10k Open-B race, Jake Finney (sophomore, Post Falls, Idaho) ran a PR time of 30:46.81 for 17th and Kennan Schrag ran a time of 31:13.81 for 25th.
Brock Eager placed 10th in the Men's Invitational hammer throw with a mark of 212-0 (64.63m). In the Open hammer throw events, Wyatt Meyring took 10th with a throw of 186-1 (56.72m) and Amani Brown was 19th with a throw of 176-7 (53.83m). In the women's Open hammer, Katie Wardsworth took 13th with a throw of 173-5 (52.85m) and Aoife Martin was 16th with a PR throw of 172-6 (52.57m).
Friday, competition at the Mt. SAC Relays continues and several Cougars will also compete at the Long Beach State Beach Invite.
