Cougars Improve Marks at Whitworth’s Sam Adams Classic

Brock Eager won the hammer at the Sam Adams Classic meet with a heave of  225-feet 1 inch (68.68m), fourth-best in WSU all-time and second-best nationally to-date.

SPOKANE, Wash. -- A concentrated contingent of Washington State competitors tallied 13 wins and six lifetime-best marks Thursday and Friday at the 12th Whitworth University Sam Adams Classic meet in at the Pine Bowl/Boppell Track in Spokane.
 
Less than a week after Brock Eager (redshirt sophomore, Renton, Wash.) tossed a personal-record in the hammer that was sixth-best in WSU all-time records, Eager surpassed that mark with a throw of 225-feet 1 inch (68.68m) to win the men's hammer Thursday afternoon. His Sam Adams Classic mark moves him up to fourth-best in WSU all-time records in an event where the top 10 had been dormant for 18 years.
 
Eager led a first through fourth in the Cougars finish in the men's hammer. Wyatt Meyring took second place with a PR throw of 193-1 (58.86m), Travis Pickett was third with a toss of 190-10 (58.18m) and Amani Brown was fourth with his mark of 177-5 (54.08m).
 
In other events staged Thursday, Katie Wardsworth (redshirt junior, Spokane Valley) won the women's hammer with her throw of 179-5 (54.69m). Aoife Martin placed third with a PR throw of 167-7 (51.07m).
 
Kelsey Kehl (freshman, Baldwin City, Kan.) won the women's javelin with a throw of 136-1 (41.47m) with Kristen McDonnell runner-up with a mark of 126-7 (38.58m).
 
WSU women winning events Friday were ShaRaya Quinn in the 100m hurdles (15.24 seconds), Lateah Holmes in the high jump (1.59m/5-2 1/2), Katelyn Frost in the pole vault (3.59m/11-5 3/4), McKenna Hogan in the long jump (5.37m/17-7 1/2), and Kaitlin Krouse in the discus (40.16m/131-9).
 
Cougar men capturing wins Friday included Peyton Fredrickson in the high jump (2.00m/6-6 3/4), Tucker Mjelde in the pole vault (4.55m/14-11), Josh Colbert in the triple jump (14.09m/46-2 3/4 with a hyper wind of 4.2 meters per second), Jake Callaghan in the shot put (16.53m/54-2 3/4), and Tyler Jackson in the discus (48.92m/160-6).
 
Next weekend are busy times for the Cougars track and field competitors. WSU will send student-athletes to the San Francisco State Distance Carnival Friday, March 31, and to the Stanford Invitational and UCLA Bruins Legend Invitational Friday and Saturday, March 31 and April 1.
