LONG BEACH, Calif. -- A pair of Washington State hammer throwers opened the 2017 track and field outdoor season by etching their names in the Cougar all-time top ten rankings with their performances at the USC Trojan Invitational meet Friday at Long Beach State's Jack Rose Track.
Redshirt sophomore Brock Eager (Renton, Wash.) was the runner-up in the men's hammer with his lifetime-best toss of 212-feet 4 inches (64.71m). His throw is the sixth-best in WSU all-time records and the first time since 1999 a new mark has been added to the school's top ten list. Travis Pickett (redshirt senior, Snohomish, Wash.) also threw a PR mark of 197-6 (60.20m) for fifth place. Wyatt Meyring (redshirt junior, Edmonds, Wash.) threw the hammer 187-11 (57.29m) for seventh place.
Katie Wardsworth (redshirt junior, Spokane Valley, Wash.) also heaved the hammer a PR distance of 188-4 (57.41m) for second place in the women's event. Wardsworth, who started the season with the fifth-best hammer mark in school history, moved up a notch with Friday's performance. WSU's Aoife Martin (redshirt freshman, Seattle) threw a PR distance of 158-2 (48.22m) for 10th place. Kaitlin Krouse (sophomore, Chewelah, Wash.) threw the hammer 114-0 (34.74m) for 17th.
Adam Mahama (redshirt senior, Pullman, Wash.) was the runner-up in the men's discus with a mark of 172-8 (52.64m) while Tyler Jackson (redshirt junior, Richland, Wash.) threw a PR distance of 157-5 (47.99m) for 10th place.
Krouse also threw the discus Friday with a fifth-place finish after a throw of 135-11 (41.43m). Chrisshnay Brown (sophomore, Lompoc, Calif.) had a discus mark of 118-7 (36.14m) for 10th.
The Trojan Invitational meet continues Saturday morning at 10 a.m. at Loker Stadium/Cromwell Field on the USC campus.
