Adomaviciute Captures Gold at U23 World Championships

Elling Quaintance advanced to the A/B Semifinals at the Junior World Rowing Championships.
ROTTERDAM, Netherlands – Washington State rowing senior Ieva Adomaviciute captured gold for Lithuania in the women's single sculls at the Under 23 World Rowing Championships, Friday, Aug. 26 at Rotterdam, Netherlands. Her teammate, freshman Ivy Elling Quaintance advanced to the A/B Semifinals at the Junior World Championships Friday.Â
A native of Kaunas, Lithuania, Adomaviciute trailed Lovisa Claesson of Sweden and Carlotta Nwajide of Germany early, but caught up at the 1,000-meter mark. She slowly established a lead, taking over first at the 1,500m mark. Adomaviciute continued to distance herself through the last 500m as she won by over three seconds with a time of 8:20.49. Claesson captured the silver for Sweden in at 8:23.90, followed by Nwajide in third for Germany with a time of 8:26.38.Â
Adomaviciute excelled throughout her heats, which began Sunday, Aug. 21. Racing in the fourth heat Sunday, she finished just over two seconds behind first-place Canada at 7:44.530. The mark propelled Adomaviciute to the second flight of the quarterfinals, Tuesday, where she recorded the best finish of her flight, crossing at 7:44.290. It was the third-best finishing time of the two quarterfinal flights, and set the stage for her to out-stroke the competition and post the best time of the semifinal A/B flights at 7:33.900.
In Junior World Championship action, Elling Quaintance, of Sidney, British Columbia, advanced out of the fourth flight of the Repechage to the A/B Semifinals in the junior women's double sculls, Friday, also at Rotterdam, Netherlands. Along with Emma Gray, Elling Quaintance, won her Repechage heat with a time of 7:43.55, less than a second ahead of Spain in second with a time of 7:44.43. Elling Quaintance moves on to the semifinals, Saturday, Aug. 27 at 8:35 a.m. PT.Â
Three former and current Cougars competed in finals a day prior, Thursday, at the U23 Championships, as senior Nicole Hare (Calgary, Alberta) took home the women's pair championship. Junior Lucie Weissova picked up a B Final win, competing with the Czech Republic's eight, and former Cougar rower Morgan Cathrea took home a B Final win in Canada's four.Â
