August 25, 2016 | Rowing
PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State rowing senior Nicole Hare returned from the Olympic Games at Rio, to win gold in the women's pair at the 2016 World Rowing Under 23 Championships at Rotterdam, Netherlands. Her current teammate, Lucie Weissova, picked up a B Final win, competing with the Czech Republic's eight, and former Cougar rower Morgan Cathrea took home a B Final win in Canada's four.Â
Hare, who was competing with Hillary Janssens in the pair event, helped Canada row past Italy, Russia, the United States, Norway, and Germany in the final. The pair grabbed the title at 7:07.490, more than two seconds faster than the second-place crew, Italy. For Hare, the Calgary, Alberta native, it was her second time edging the Italians this week, which she defeated by just over a second in the first heat to advance to the final.Â
Weissova, a native of Prague, Czech Republic, and currently a junior on the Washington State rowing team, helped her eight row to a five-second victory over France in the B Final of competition. The Czech Republic crossed at 6:30.210.Â
Cathrea, a 2016 graduate, won her B Final in team Canada's four, defeating China, Poland, and the Ukraine with a time of 6:53.950.Â
Friday, senior Ieva Adomaviciute, of Kaunas, Lithuania, has a chance at the championship in the single sculls, while freshman Ivy Elling Quaintance, of Sidney, British Columbia, has a chance to advance out of the fourth flight of the Repechage at the Junior World Championships, competing in the junior women's double sculls.Â
Action for the Cougar-affiliated rowers at the World Under 23 and Junior Championships will continue Friday, Aug. 26. For more detailed results, along with a complete race schedule and startlists, please visit: http://www.worldrowing.com/ .
