RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil – Former Washington State men's basketball star (2009-11) and current Golden State Warrior, Klay Thompson, captured a gold medal along with his United States basketball team as it defeated Serbia, 96-66, Sunday, in the 2016 Olympic gold medal game.
Thompson's former Aussie teammates, Aron Baynes (2006-09) and Brock Motum (2010-13) also competed Sunday, as Australia fell to Spain, 89-88, in the Bronze medal game. Australia has yet to medal in the Olympics in basketball and falls to 0-5 all-time in the Bronze medal game.
The United States picked up its 15th Olympic gold medal and it's third-straight. Serbia captured the Silver medal. Thompson captured his first gold medal and became the first Cougar men's basketball player to win an Olympic gold medal in basketball.
In the championship game, Thompson started and went 5-for-11 from the field for 12 points in 22 minutes. His Warrior teammate, Kevin Durant, paced the USA with 30 points as the United States jumped out to an early lead. The U.S. men used a 33-14 advantage in the second quarter to take a 52-29 halftime lead. The United States never looked back and went on to its 30-point, 96-66 victory.
Spain jumped out to an early lead over Australia, leading 23-17 at the end of the first quarter. The Australians, also known as the Boomers, came back, trailing by just 2, 40-38 at halftime. Spain extended its lead to 3 at the end of the third, 67-64. The game came down to the wire as there were four lead changes in the final 2 minutes. Trailing, 87-86 with 9 seconds to go, Baynes' jumper bounced off the rim and went in, giving the Boomers an 88-87 lead. On Spain's next possession a late foul call against Patty Mills gave Sergio Rodriguez 2 free throw attempts. Rodriguez hit both giving Australia one more opportunity to with the game, trailing by one with 5 seconds to go. The Aussies called timeout, advancing the ball to the other end of the court. The Boomers couldn't get a final shot off, as they fell, 89-88.
Mills led the way with 30 points. Motum was 6-for-8 from the field to finish with 12 points and 6 rebounds in 16 minutes. Baynes finished with 6 points and 4 boards in 23 minutes of action.
